Intracellular bacteria tend to feed off iron in macrophages. Iron in macrophages is elevated in high hepcidin conditions.
Common species
Listeria, salmonella, chlamydia, brucella, mycobacteria, Rickettsia. Brucella is especially known to raise hepcidin which might be the cause of the hemochromatosis gene mutation.
Symptoms
Intracellular bacteria are implicated in chronic fatigue, cystic fibrosis and other issues [1].
Link to rheumatic disease [2]
Vitamin D and symptoms [3] rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, sarcoidosis.
Linked to multiple sclerosis, alzheimers, and parkingsons [4].
PGE2
Rickettsia bacteria upregulate PGE2 [5]
Cellular immunity
sequestering iron, oxidation, nitric oxide, acidification, restrict fatty acids, restrict amino acids, antimicrobial peptides and cytokines [6].
CD4 and CD8 responses [7]
